A Goldendoodle crosses a Golden Retriever with a Poodle; a Labradoodle crosses a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. Both are low-shedding, highly trainable, and wonderful with families — but they differ meaningfully in energy, build, price, and how they cope with India’s climate. This guide covers every factor side by side so you can decide which is the better fit for your home.

Temperament: The Most Important Difference
The Golden Retriever’s personality sets the Goldendoodle apart. Goldens are famously soft-natured, patient, and emotionally attuned — they sense when a family member is upset and respond with quiet presence. The Goldendoodle inherits this gentleness. They are rarely boisterous with children, they do well with elderly family members, and they rarely push boundaries.
Labradoodles carry the Labrador’s enthusiasm. Labs are driven, playful, and always “on” — they want to fetch, run, and explore. Labradoodles are wonderful with active children who love rough play and long walks, but they can be too bouncy for toddlers or seniors who prefer a calmer dog. A young Labradoodle in a small apartment with no exercise outlet will find ways to entertain itself that you won’t enjoy.
Choose a Goldendoodle if your household is calm, includes elderly members, or you want a dog that is happy with two moderate walks a day.
Choose a Labradoodle if you run, cycle, have high-energy children, or want a dog that will happily cover 5–8 km a day with you.
How Each Breed Handles India’s Climate
Both breeds need to be kept indoors with air conditioning in peak summer (April–June in most Indian cities). Neither is adapted to heat — they are cold-climate hybrids. That said, there are differences:
- Coat density: Curly-coated dogs of both breeds trap more heat than wavy-coated dogs. If you’re in Chennai, Mumbai, or Hyderabad where temperatures stay high for longer, a wavy F1 coat is preferable over a dense curly coat.
- Energy management in heat: Labradoodles, being higher-energy, are harder to keep comfortable if they aren’t getting enough exercise. In peak summer this becomes a management challenge — they need mental stimulation indoors when outdoor exercise is restricted.
- Monsoon: Both breeds’ curly coats mat faster when wet. Regular brushing during monsoon season (June–September) is non-negotiable for either breed.
Grooming: Nearly Identical
Both breeds require professional grooming every 8–10 weeks and daily brushing (or at minimum 3–4 times per week) to prevent matting. Grooming costs in Indian metro cities run ₹1,500–₹4,000 per session depending on size. A Standard Goldendoodle and a Standard Labradoodle will cost the same to groom.
The only practical grooming difference: Goldendoodles tend to have slightly more volume in their coats, which can mean more brushing time at home. But for most families this difference is minor.
Health and Lifespan
Both breeds benefit from hybrid vigour when parents are properly health-tested. Key conditions to screen for in both lines:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia: Both Golden Retrievers and Labradors are prone to hip and elbow issues. OFA hip certification on both parents is essential — don’t skip this regardless of which breed you choose.
- Eye conditions: PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and other eye conditions run in both parent breeds. DNA panel testing should include eye health markers.
- Exercise-induced collapse (EIC): Specific to Labradors — Labradoodle breeders should DNA-test for EIC before breeding.
- Cancer: Golden Retrievers have among the highest cancer rates of any breed. Goldendoodles inherit some of this predisposition — it does not disappear in F1 crosses.
Lifespan: Mini Goldendoodles and Mini Labradoodles both live 12–15 years. Standard sizes of both breeds average 10–13 years.
Which Is Easier to Train?
Both are among the easiest breeds to train — the Poodle’s intelligence combines with two naturally biddable retriever breeds. In practice, the Goldendoodle tends to be slightly more handler-focused (they want to please you), while the Labradoodle can be more independently motivated (they want to explore). This means:
- Goldendoodles generally respond better to first-time dog owners who use positive reinforcement consistently but aren’t highly experienced.
- Labradoodles can be faster to train if you channel their energy correctly, but they need more consistent boundaries to prevent boundary-testing.
Price in India: Goldendoodle Is More Expensive
Goldendoodles consistently cost more in India because Golden Retrievers are more expensive to breed than Labradors, and the demand for Goldendoodles is higher. From a responsible OFA-certified breeder:
- Mini Goldendoodle: ₹70,000–₹2,00,000
- Standard Goldendoodle: ₹1,00,000–₹3,00,000
- Mini Labradoodle: ₹45,000–₹1,30,000
- Standard Labradoodle: ₹60,000–₹1,70,000
Be cautious of any price significantly below these ranges. Unusually low prices almost always indicate no OFA health testing, no DNA panels, or a high-volume commercial breeding operation. See our guide on how to verify a breeder in India before making any deposit.
The Verdict: Which Should You Choose?
Choose a Goldendoodle if: Your family is calm and affectionate, you have elderly members or young toddlers, you live in a smaller apartment, you want a dog that bonds deeply and stays close to its people, or you’re a first-time dog owner.
Choose a Labradoodle if: You lead an active lifestyle, you have high-energy children who want a rough-and-tumble companion, you have space to exercise the dog extensively, or the higher Goldendoodle price is a factor in your decision.
Both are excellent family dogs. The wrong choice is usually made when someone picks based on appearance alone rather than matching energy level and temperament to their actual lifestyle.
