OFA Hip Certification Explained: What Indian Puppy Buyers Must Know

admin ยท May 18, 2026 ยท 3 min read

OFA stands for Orthopedic Foundation for Animals โ€” an American non-profit organisation that maintains a registry of genetic disease screening results for dogs. OFA hip certification is one of the most important health tests you should verify when buying any medium or large-breed puppy in India, including Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, and Aussiedoodles. Here is everything you need to know.

What is Hip Dysplasia in Dogs?

Hip dysplasia is a developmental condition where the hip joint forms incorrectly โ€” the ball and socket do not fit or function properly, causing progressive joint deterioration and arthritis. It is one of the most common and costly inherited conditions in larger dog breeds. In severe cases, it requires expensive surgical intervention (costing โ‚น1,50,000โ€“โ‚น4,00,000 per hip in India) and significantly reduces a dog’s quality of life and mobility. It is highly hereditary โ€” dogs from parents with dysplastic hips have a dramatically elevated risk of developing it themselves.

How OFA Hip Certification Works

The OFA evaluates hip radiographs (X-rays) submitted by veterinarians. The X-rays are independently reviewed by three board-certified veterinary radiologists who grade the hips using a standardised 7-point scale: Excellent, Good, Fair (all considered passing/”normal”), Borderline, Mild, Moderate, and Severe (the last three indicate dysplasia). A dog receives an OFA number only if rated Excellent, Good, or Fair. Responsible breeders only breed dogs rated Excellent or Good for the best health outcomes in offspring.

Finding OFA Certification in India

OFA certification requires specialised positioning of the radiograph and submission to the OFA database. In India, not all veterinary practices have the equipment or training for OFA-standard hip radiographs. Look for veterinary orthopaedic specialists in major cities. Some breeders use PennHIP (another internationally recognised hip evaluation system, sometimes considered more accurate than OFA for predicting dysplasia susceptibility) โ€” this is equally valid.

At PoodleDoodle Puppies, all our breeding dogs have OFA Excellent or Good certified hips, verified by India-based veterinary orthopaedic specialists using OFA-standard positioning. Certificates are available for review upon request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does OFA certification guarantee my puppy won’t have hip problems?
A: No certification is an absolute guarantee. Hip dysplasia has both genetic and environmental components (rapid growth, excess weight, inappropriate exercise in puppyhood all influence development). However, OFA Excellent or Good-rated parents dramatically reduce genetic risk โ€” one of the most significant steps a breeder can take to protect puppy health.

Q: What if a breeder says their dogs are “checked by a vet” but doesn’t have OFA numbers?
A: “Checked by a vet” without an OFA number or equivalent radiographic evaluation is not hip certification. Any vet can listen to a dog’s heartbeat and call it “healthy” โ€” hip evaluation requires specific radiographic positioning, expert evaluation, and a registered result.

Q: At what age can a dog be OFA certified?
A: Preliminary OFA evaluations can be done from 4 months, but only evaluations at 24 months or older receive a permanent OFA number. Responsible breeders certify their dogs at 24+ months before they are used for breeding.

Q: Should I also ask about elbow certification?
A: Yes โ€” elbow dysplasia is equally important in larger Doodle breeds. OFA also evaluates elbows (OFA Elbow). For Labradoodles particularly, both hip and elbow OFA certification of parents is the gold standard.

Q: Is PennHIP better than OFA?
A: Both are well-regarded, peer-reviewed systems. PennHIP uses distraction radiography and is considered by some researchers to be more sensitive for early detection. OFA is more widely known in India. Either is acceptable โ€” what matters is that one of them has been done by both parents, with results available for buyer review.
