Owning a Poodle or Doodle in Delhi and NCR: Summer Heat, Pollution and Winter Care

admin · May 18, 2026 · 3 min read

Delhi presents a more challenging environment for Poodles and Doodles than most other Indian metros — the extreme summer heat (45°C+), severe winter cold, and year-round air quality issues all require specific management. Despite this, Doodles thrive in Delhi with the right adjustments. Here is what Delhi and NCR residents need to know.

Managing Delhi Summers

May and June in Delhi are genuinely dangerous for Poodles and Doodles. Core temperatures of 44–46°C and humidity create high heat stroke risk. Essential summer protocol: exercise only before 7 AM and after 8 PM. Never walk on asphalt in the afternoon — pavement temperatures can reach 60°C. Keep the dog indoors with air conditioning during peak hours (11 AM–5 PM). Always carry water. Watch for early heat stress signs: excessive panting, drooling, and reluctance to move.

Delhi Air Quality and Dogs

Delhi’s AQI regularly hits “Very Unhealthy” and “Hazardous” levels, especially October–January. Dogs breathe the same air. On days with AQI above 200, reduce outdoor exercise. Respiratory issues are more common in Delhi Doodles — if your dog develops a persistent cough or exercise intolerance, consult a vet and mention the air quality context. HEPA air purifiers in rooms where the dog sleeps help significantly.

Delhi Winters

December–January temperatures drop to 3–8°C at night in Delhi. Doodles with good coats manage well but puppies and shaved Doodles need a dog coat/jacket for outdoor excursions. Paw care is important — cold concrete dries out paw pads. Apply paw balm or coconut oil before winter walks.

Veterinary Clinics in Delhi NCR

Cessna Lifeline (Gurugram) — Delhi’s best-equipped referral hospital. Defence Colony Vet Clinic — long-established, trusted by Delhi dog owners. Noida: Smart Vet clinic and Dogpaw Hospital are well-reviewed. Gurgaon: PetWorld Veterinary Hospital.

Exercise in Delhi

Lodhi Garden — one of India’s best urban dog parks, large green space, morning dog community. Nehru Park (Chanakyapuri) — spacious, good for off-leash play in the quieter sections. DLF parks in Gurugram and Noida sector parks are popular alternatives for NCR residents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Should I shave my Doodle’s coat in Delhi summers?
A: Counter-intuitively, a well-maintained coat provides insulation from heat as well as cold. A trim (not shave) to 2–3 cm reduces matting and overheating without removing the insulating layer. Never shave to the skin in summer — it removes the UV barrier and increases heat absorption.

Q: Can I keep a Doodle without AC in Delhi?
A: Not safely during May–June. Air conditioning for at least the hours of 10 AM–6 PM is essential during peak summer.
