What is a Maltipoo?
A Maltipoo is a small hybrid breed created by crossing a Maltese with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Weighing just 2–7 kg at maturity, Maltipoos are one of the smallest doodle breeds. They are bred specifically as companion dogs — bred for the qualities that make them excellent emotional support and lap dogs: gentle temperament, minimal exercise needs, and hypoallergenic coats.
In India’s urban housing market, Maltipoos have become increasingly popular because they require no yard, minimal outdoor exercise, and are quiet enough for apartment buildings.
How much does a Maltipoo cost in India?
Maltipoo puppies from health-tested parents cost ₹55,000–₹80,000 in India. Be cautious of Maltipoos sold under ₹30,000 — these often come from unscreened parents and can have serious health issues including heart problems and hypoglycaemia.
Maltipoo temperament
Maltipoos are among the gentlest, most affectionate small dogs available. They bond intensely with their primary owner and are prone to separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. Key traits:
- Gentle and quiet — rarely bark excessively when properly trained
- Lap dog — prefer to be near or on their person
- Sensitive — do not respond well to harsh training methods
- Long-lived — commonly 12–16 years with proper care
- Low exercise needs — 20–30 min of indoor play is sufficient
Maltipoos are India's most apartment-friendly breed. Their tiny size (2–7 kg) means they thrive in studio and 1BHK apartments. In summer, a short puppy cut (every 6 weeks) keeps them comfortable. They are sensitive to extreme heat, so limit outdoor time between 10am–6pm.
