What is a Bernedoodle?
A Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog created by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle (Standard, Miniature, or Toy). First intentionally bred by Sherry Rupke of SwissRidge Kennels in 2003, the Bernedoodle combines the Bernese Mountain Dog’s calm, loyal personality with the Poodle’s intelligence and low-shedding coat.
The Bernedoodle’s distinctive tricolour coat (black, white, and brown) makes it one of the most visually striking doodle breeds. In India, Bernedoodles are gaining popularity among families in cooler cities and among buyers who prefer a calm, low-energy companion over a high-energy retriever-cross.
How much does a Bernedoodle cost in India?
Bernedoodle puppies cost ₹90,000–₹1,50,000 in India from reputable breeders. The tricolour pattern and rarity of quality Bernese Mountain Dog parent stock in India means Bernedoodles are priced at a premium. At PoodleDoodle, all pricing is transparent with no hidden fees.
Bernedoodle temperament
Bernedoodles are often described as goofy, loyal, and gentle giants. They inherit the Bernese Mountain Dog’s calm nature and the Poodle’s playfulness. Key traits:
- Calm — lower energy than Goldendoodles or Labradoodles
- Loyal — deeply bond with one or two family members
- Gentle — excellent with small children and elderly family members
- Stubborn phase — can have a stubborn adolescent phase (6–18 months)
- Long-lived — Mini Bernedoodles live 14–18 years
Bernedoodles are naturally more suited to cooler Indian climates (Bangalore, Pune, Delhi NCR winters). In hotter cities like Chennai and Mumbai, Mini Bernedoodles (under 15 kg) are recommended. Daily AC time and morning/evening-only outdoor walks are essential.
